In industrial hydraulic systems, reliable pressure measurement is an essential technical requirement: from protecting hydraulic components to controlling work cycles, any variation not detected in time can result in machine downtime or circuit damage.

The EPX02 electronic pressure switch is the new-generation pressure transducer developed by Elettrotec to meet these needs with precision, robustness, and flexibility. With a measuring range from -1 bar up to 1000 bar and a standard accuracy of ≤ 0.5% full scale, it represents a suitable technical solution for both low-pressure applications and high-pressure circuits typical of industrial hydraulics.

The pressure transducer in hydraulic systems

Within industrial hydraulic systems, pressure control is a process variable that directly affects machining quality, energy efficiency, and plant safety. In machine tools, in particular, pressure profiles change rapidly between different operating phases (feed, machining, return), and the pressure sensor must be able to follow these transitions with adequate responsiveness. The EPX02 declares a response time of ≤ 4 ms, making it technically suitable even in fast cycles and frequent load variations.

Compatibility with hydraulic and pneumatic systems, pumps, and compressors further expands its field of use beyond strict hydraulics. However, the main application remains the machine tool sector and, more generally, industrial machinery where pressure monitoring and regulation are critical process parameters.

On the left, an external view and a detailed circuit diagram of the Hydraulic Power Unit (HPU), including tank, pump, filter, and valves, connected to a CNC milling machine. At the center, a 3D physical hydraulic block with an analog pressure gauge (0–20 BAR) and an Elettrotec EPX02 digital pressure transducer. A zoomed-in section of the block shows details of the EPX02 transducer, labeled ‘Elettrotec EPX02 DIGITAL PRESSURE TRANSDUCER’. The transducer sends a ‘Pressure Signal’ to a Process Controller (PLC) shown on the right. The PLC processes the signal and provides ‘Feedback Control’ to the pump and sends control signals to various hydraulic actuators: linear cylinders of different sizes and a 2-joint robotic arm, all labeled ‘PROCESS CONTROLLER (PLC)’. The diagram is enclosed in a technical frame with coordinate references (letters and numbers).

Ease of installation: 330° adjustable head and M12 connection

From an installation standpoint, the EPX02 introduces several design solutions that address practical needs in the industry. The head can rotate up to 330°, allowing the display to be positioned for optimal reading regardless of the hydraulic fitting orientation. In machine panels and systems with limited internal space, this feature results in reduced assembly time and improved readability during inspection and maintenance.

The electrical connection uses a 5-pin M12x1 connector, a de facto standard in European industrial automation. This simplifies integration into existing wiring, reduces connection errors, and allows quick device replacement without requiring modifications to the electrical system. The standard threaded connection is G 1/4″, with variants available upon request.

On-device configuration: LED display and dual alarm

Among Elettrotec electronic pressure switches and transmitters, the EPX02 stands out for its ability to be configured directly on the device via an integrated 4-digit LED display. This eliminates the need for dedicated software or external programming interfaces, allowing maintenance personnel to set thresholds directly in the field.

The device supports up to two independent alarms, configurable in PNP or NPN mode with a maximum current of 1.2 A each, with adjustable hysteresis to adapt sensor behavior to process requirements. Regarding analog output, the EPX02 is available in 0–10 V, 4–20 mA, 0–5 V, and 0–4.5 V configurations, with additional variants available upon request, ensuring compatibility with most controllers and SCADA systems used in industrial plants.

At the center, mounted on a polished stainless steel manifold block, there is an Elettrotec EPX02 digital pressure transducer with a stainless steel body and a red LED display showing the reading ‘8.8.8.8’ (inactive) with ‘BAR’ below. The transducer is connected to a black M12 connector cable. On the left, an analog pressure gauge with a 0–20 BAR scale and stainless steel body is mounted on the same manifold block. Several braided hydraulic hoses and rigid steel pipes are connected to the manifold. In the slightly blurred background, precision workshop machinery can be seen, including a CNC milling machine and a multi-axis robotic arm, highlighting the system’s real-world application in a manufacturing context.

Construction and reliability: AISI 316L and IP65

Material selection reflects its intended use in demanding production environments. The body is made of stainless steel 316, and wetted parts — those in direct contact with the pressurized fluid — are made of AISI 316L, known for its superior resistance to intergranular corrosion. This is particularly relevant in hydraulic systems using aggressive fluids or operating in high-humidity environments. The sensor is made of silicon, with an operating fluid temperature range from -20°C to +80°C.

The IP65 protection rating ensures resistance to dust and water jets, common conditions in mechanical processing environments. The declared mechanical life exceeds one million cycles, and signal stability is guaranteed within 0.5% F.S. per year, qualifying the EPX02 as a pressure sensor suitable for continuous industrial operation.

Conclusion

The EPX02 combines in a compact format the set of technical features that represent the reference standard for an industrial pressure sensor intended for continuous use.
Its ease of installation and configuration makes it suitable for both new systems and upgrades of existing hydraulic systems.
